Immunity & Digestion

Did you know that 70-80% of our immune cells are located in the gut?!  We’re in a time right now that we want to have a healthy immune system more than ever.  Having a healthy immune system directly relates to a healthy digestive system.  The immune system is typically used to protect the body from invaders like a virus, fungus, bacteria, etc.  The body needs the right nutrients, healthy lifestyle, and plenty of rest to accomplish the body’s natural response to stressors.

So what can we do to support a healthy digestive system?

Eating in a relaxed and slowed state helps the body prepare for digestion.  Take a couple of deep breaths or take a moment to give gratitude or prayer before starting your meal.  Chew your food 20-30 times, to the texture of applesauce.  If the stomach isn’t producing enough stomach acid then our food isn’t being broken down appropriately.  Not enough stomach acid and enzymes allow harmful invaders to survive and multiply.  Lemon water or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar prior to eating can assist in digestion.

Our body needs adequate protein for digestion processes, and essential fatty acids to reduce inflammation along with complex carbohydrates that feed the good bacteria in the gut.  An imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria can be due to chronic stress, antibiotics and food allergies/sensitivities.

Here’s a list of some therapeutic foods that can assist in digestion.  This is not an exhaustive list by any means!

Both bone broth and okra can help soothe the digestive tract and support the integrity of the gut lining.

Dandelion root and Jerusalem artichoke promotes healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract.

Fresh fennel bulbs contains trace minerals and healing properties for digestive function.

In addition to therapeutic foods, there are a variety of nutrients that can support digestion.  Some of these include zinc, folate, B vitamins, digestive bitters, magnesium, chlorophyll, vitamin C, iron, and goldenseal.

Conversely, there are foods that can cause inflammatory reactions and gut damage.  Some of these potential allergens include gluten, corn, soy, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish/shellfish, and sesame.

Having healthy digestion is the foundation for having a healthy immune system. Is there one thing that you can change?  Progression, not perfection!
