As 2022 emerges, millions of people all across the country are preparing themselves, as has been the case for years, as Americans use the new year as an opportunity to "start fresh". Millions of New Year’s Resolutions are set with the hopes of improving someone’s life. Arguably the most common resolution you will hear about in the coming weeks is to exercise more.
Everyone has their reasons for setting goals at the beginning of the year. They may be for personal reasons or even health reasons. It’s important to ask yourself why you want to engage in them. Why is this New Year’s Resolution so important to you? What motivates you to take this massive leap to make a change in your life? Once you find the reason that drives you, you will have a better mindset to complete your goals.
Once you figure out your "why", now you can move onto these habits that'll help your resolutions last all year, rather than fade away with the excitement of the New Year.
Start small- Making a series of small changes is much more sustainable than one massive change.
Set actual goals - Goals need to be specific. Without a specific goal to aim for we often get lost along the way. A way to help you stay on track with your goals is to set daily targets that help you reach those goals. For example, if your goal is to be able to lift 80lbs, then set smaller targets each day of lifting 30lbs, then 35lbs, and gradually increase. IF your target is to lose 40lbs, think of something in your diet that you can swap each day or week for a healthier alternative.
Don’t beat yourself up - life happens, however, don’t let it become an excuse. You are not defined by what happens to you, you are defined by how you react to it. If you get off track, that’s okay, you can always get back on track, and if you need help, myself, or Coach Marcellus, or Coach Kyle are always here to help.
Which leads me into the next tip: Create accountability! You do not have to go it alone, and in fact, to stick to your fitness new year’s resolution, you shouldn’t go it alone. Make yourself accountable by telling people your fitness new year’s resolution. Put it out there, or join a group of individuals who are all on the same path or have similar resolutions and create a support group.
It is proven that making yourself accountable or working with a trainer or in a group can make you more than 65% more likely to succeed.
